Hi,

I have just had as replacement engine put in my 88 t25. It is a 1.9td AAZ replacing a 1.6td JX. The guys had some issues with the cooling system electronics but these seem to be resolved . HOWEVER, I took it out today and when I returned from a short run the Radiator was steaming . It was raining really hard incidentally. I have heard about bleeding issues when the cooling system has been empty. Any thoughts or help with this please. Then water levels are holding and the temperature gauge is also showing normal temperature.

Thanks in advance for any help

The wiki link at the top of the page has excellent info on bleeding and much other interesting and useful stuff.. Easy to do yourself if you think it might not have been done right.

The steam you mention could be from rain hitting the radiator (I had a Saab that worried me with that trick very frequently), or it could be a leak, but as you say the levels are not dropping it doesn't sound like a leak. Mind and check that it is the level in the expansion tank that is not dropping - that needs to be brim full at all times. The tank behind the number plate flap should go up and down - this tank feeds the coolant system as the pressure drops when it cools - via the blue dalek cap on the main tank - and takes up the coolant that expands out of the main tank when hot and under pressure.

Yes, I was stopped at some traffic lights in the rain a month or so ago, and saw steam coming up from the radiator grill. All guages and indications were that the engine was at normal temperature.

I had never noticed that happen before, and it certainly put the fear of bejeezus up me at the time, but I reckon that was all it was - rain on the rad.

Thanks guys, For sure it was precipitating rather heavily (or summat like that lol) yesterday. Gonna take the ole fella out again soon and see what happens. I hope that is all it was. I need to get some confidence back after a series of problems (the over heating originally was my fault I have to admit - a stupid expensive mistake which at my age I should have known better)
