For anything major like that i'd recommend the Bently manual. Costs more than the Haynes manual but it appears to be written by someone who has actually worked on these vans....

To be honest it's a fairly straight forward thing to do. Just strip off as many of the ancillarys as you can from the top. Raise up the rear, undo the engine and then it just slides then lowers out. As always the longer you take to prepare things the more painless the process. Mark up all the cables and pipes with letters and arrows and stuff to show where they all go and you'll save yourself a load of time when you're putting the engine back in.

eyup duck,when i fitted my water cooled in,i dropped it through the engine cover hole,(it was my first time and i didnt know any different!)went straight in on me engine crane.an absolute doddle,didnt fancy all that lyin on the floor with me nugget balanced on a jack..........kind regards..................oldiguana

so how long would you recommend that an engine change, like for like, 1.9dg takes?

I would think you could do it in a day, if you have no snags what so ever. The chances of that are unlikely, bound to have some rounded off nuts or something, it also depends on what tools you have and the quality of them and where you have to do the work. I helped my brother put his 1.9 AAZ back in , the putting in bit , with mounts and exhaust back on took about an hour. He was well prepared though, he spent the rest of the day connecting everything up and bleeding the water system etc, he most likely had a bit more work as he had done a head change. It is good to have two ods even if the second one is only passing spanners etc (my job)

I'd spend a week oiling up dodgy looking rusty bolts first but easily done in a day, expertly can be done in a morning all going well! Good Luck!

takes almost as long to get all the air out of the cooling system as swapping the engine......
