I'm looking to change my header tank later on today (1.9 DG). Is there any schoolboy errors I can avoid?
Plan so far is to:
1. Ensure all is cool. Remove cap.
2. Clamp top and bottom hoses. Prob uses mole grips with padding.
3. Siphon out coolant from old tank.
4. Unplug sender
5. Unfasten hoses from tank.
6. Remove tank.
7. Change sender over to new tank.
8. Fix in new tank and plug in sender
9. Fasten hoses to tank.
10. Refill tank with coolant.
11. Unclamp hoses.
12. Top of with new coolant.

Any info/hints appreciated.

I did mine a few years ago.
Pretty much as you have said, except I didnt bother clamping the hoses.
Just made sure I tied the top hose up and out of the way to avoid coolant draining out of it.
I used a new sender as mine was broken, so just check the rubber seal is OK.

When I fitted a sender years ago the tank and the sender were incompatible in that the curve of the tank hit the corners of the sender hex.
I had to file the sender hex down to make it screw in enough to seal, worth checking it screws in without the corners fouling.

Don't clamp hoses it may damage them, just drain a few litres of coolant into a bowl by pulling off a lower hose somewhere.

Had thought about the risk of damaging the hoses, like the idea of tieing them up though and I might look to see if I can source a bung or two.

All went well I'm pleased to report.

Only slight niggle was the top pipe resealing. I hadn't checked its condition prior to starting and managed to get it to seal in the end but I definitely need to get a new one.
