Symptoms:
Hard to engage van into gear. Having to force and push hard to engage. Clunking/grinding noises and lots of shuddering before going into a gear. Reverse gear particularly bad.
EEEK...clutch problem or what?

Is it all of a sudden or has it been getting increasingly worse over time.

1.9 petrol. Slave cylinder replaced last year and had new clutch put in when we had recon engine fitted.

See the current thread on the Syncro pages - One month in Iceland in a Syncro - for another possible cause. Worn gear selector ring.

Don't only look at the gear selector lever. There's also a joint about halfway down the gear selector shaft that runs from the gear lever at the front of the van which can start to slip.

Clutch operating shaft may have one of its forks come away from the shaft.

Can you get the gears ok with the engine off ?
If so generally it's an input issue, that's spigot bearing, clutch slave cylinder, release bearing, fork, clutch

also 4 or 5 speed ?

problems only 1st and reverse or all gears ?
