Have been looking around for various campers, should I steer clear (sorry) of ones where the dash light doesn't work, the speedo does but the milometer doesn't ? Sounds expensive to me.

You're right, they aren't cheap, a good second hand one will set you back £75 plus..however, in the scheme of things this is just a drop in the ocean compared to some things.
Decent used engine £500 plus
Reasonable used Gearbox £350 plus
Used trailing arms £150 plus
A respray £2500 plus
Replacing front suspension bushes £250 plus
Set of tyres £250 plus

£75 - £90 for a decent speedo head doesn't sound that bad in comparison.

Thanks Martin, that doesn't sound too painful.
Awaiting reply from seller whether it's going to be relisted. I've read the nubies guide which was great, so I'll ask for some detailed photos before I go any further.

Don't want to put you off but these 30 year old vans will cost you several hundred a year in maintenance on average

some years less but some more, if you don't spend that it will gradually go down hill and be sold off as a 'project'

If you can't afford say 600 quid a year + 400 quid tax and insurance before you add fuel then probably better off with a Mazda bongo or a tent.

On the other hand, if you are prepared to shell out for what is after all more than just a vehicle, it should appreciate.
I have had mine for 7 years now. It cost £5k, and has recently been valued at £9k+. So it's not all bad news.
Factor in many great cheap holidays, breaks and overnighters, and then decide if it's worthwhile.

Thanks for feedback, good and bad, I have always had old cars so I'm used to paying for their maintenance and looking after them. We haven't had a camper before, so it's a toe in the water, if we really enjoy owning one we may then consider a newer model, but if it doesn't get used enough, will sell on without loosing too much monies.

Buy the best you can find. A bus with stupid little faults like that has not been looked after. You have to wonder what else they neglected.....

Our`s has got the same silly little fault, speedo working mileometer not, the shaft that holds the number dials slides to the left and the gear connected to the speedo that in turn then turns the shaft disengagesI can garuantee you that ours is spot on in every other department, I know what the issue is and its an easy fix and I am planning on getting it sorted before our next trip. So as said body work is the most important followed in my opinion by engine/gearbox and cooling system and then quality of interior.

You could buy ours (not that it is for sale and never will be) and only have a mileometer to fix, or you could buy anouther with a working mileometer and spend a couple of grand on bodywork. At worst you could knock the seller down a few quid and source a working replacement.
