Manky wiring on old speakers..please help!

Im not sure this is the right section to post in (?) But recently, with help from a friend, I installed 2 rear speakers into the kickpanel of the rock n roll bed.
It sounded great!
Then one day, I realised one speaker wasnt working and on investigation, I found that the wire leading to the speaker had disappeared?! Im assuming it was down to the fact that I stored loads of stuff in the storage part of bed and its interfered with the speaker wires.
It appears that I still cant find the wire..although its really messy and theres a bundle of wire stuck behind an interior panel.
Under the rock no roll bed there are old wires looking really tired and gooey and horrible.

I want to start from the beginning with the speakers wires so I can replace them and assure this doesnt happen again.
Is there a guide I can follow?

Thanks all

If it was working before, then the wires were obviously there - you've probably dislodged them when packing the van. Look for a twin wire that matches the one on the working speaker. If you do decide to replace it, then unless you're running a big meaty sound system, then any speaker wire from Halfords (other motor factors are available) will do the job.

thanks tforturton :)
Yes its been dislodged, unfortunately I lost the plot a bit trying to find it. I had put in all new plywood door cards and ended up having to break one to get behind it :( sad times! Still could not find the end of the bundle of wire?! How odd.
I suppose what I mean is If I find the speaker wire in Halfords for expample, what do I do with it? Im not very up on wiring and wouldnt know where it connects to outside of the actual speakers?!

It sounds like it might be time to strip out all the old wiring before it shorts out and things stop working or worse still something catches fire.

One end of your speaker wire goes to the speaker and the other to the stereo, assuming you haven't got an amp fitted. What did you do when you fitted the rear speakers the first time? Did you use wiring that was already there?

Hi Boxy, sorry only just seen this ! Just moved house and been without internet for over a month.

So, yes, the old speaker wire was used. There's no amp it just goes straight to the stereo...i hope thats right, I really know nothing about fitting stereos

It does seem time to re-do everything, I think you're right.
