Why, what does a clutch switch do?

The TDI ECU uses the clutch switch signal to blip the fuelling during gear changes, and it does make for noticably smoother changes. I have verified this on my pickup. With no switch present I found it hard to avoid the propshaft 'ping' and a little lurch at virtually every change. After re-fitting the switch, what a relief ! Back to how it should be. Very high recommended to fit the clutch switch, all my TDI harnesses have provision for this.

I don't get it, I was expecting to see a shunted van from someone's improper use of the Cruise circuit lol

Oddly, about 10 of the top 30 pictures are old ones from the first incarnation of my AFN install.

Dave.

Hi Dave, yes, its used for cruise too. I didn't say it was *only* used to help with gearchanges. Re. the images, I was just struck by the diversity of potentially useful links to posts by various people on various threads that I've posted or been referenced on over the years.

Is this just AFN or would it be the same for an AHU? We have a propshaft pinging issue..

Shaun, yes all TDI's. If your prop pings every time you change gear you may be pleasantly surprised the difference a switch makes.

Ah right, yes, to be fair your help was invaluable in getting my mk4 golf clocks fuel gauge reading right :ok

Would be nice if there was a complete repository for all the hints, tips and procedures we've all provided over the years.

Since we last spoke I got my clocks sorted and got the immobiliser in the clocks working 100%. Feels much safer than it used to.

Dave.

Connections for clutch switch:

68-pin ECU, 'early' style (eg. Mk3 Golf, Sharan)
Pin 1 - Sender earth (brown/blue)
Pin 2 - T68/17 (white/red)

68-pin ECU, 'late' style (eg. early 3B Passat)
Pin 1 - T68/17 (red/yellow)
Pin 2 - Switched 12v (red/white)

80-pin ECU
Pin 1 - T80/46 (red/yellow)
Pin 2 - Switched 12v (red/white)

The best switch to use is the 97> one with the M12 thread, not the Mk3 Golf clip-in one. RJES does a nice little bracket but it's only a bit of bent metal really so you may prefer to do that yourself. You'll need 2x M12x1.5 nuts (finer pitch than standard), use a multimeter to check the switch contacts as you adjust the position. 1/2 nuts better than full nuts as you'll have more adjustment range. Try and get the signal as 'binary' as you can if you get my drift, so the switch only operates when you actually are pushing the clutch pedal. You don't want it operating every time a bump in the road causes the pedal to bounce..
