Handbrake threaded rod

Hi everyone,
I replaced the handbrake cable to the back left wheel at the weekend but I couldn't loosen the nut (badly seized) on the threaded bar to hook on the cable to the balance bar. After some f'ing and blinding I manage to pull the cable onto the balance bar. Now however I cant seem to tighten the handbrake. I have adjusted at the wheel drum but the whole balance bar mechanism seems slack, so I felt just tightening up the nut there would solve my issue.
Got a nut splitter to remove the nut but have managed to twist and turn and make a balls of the threaded bar. So I think I now just have to cut away some of it, get a coupler and some new 6mm threaded bar and put it back together that way. My question is, am I better replacing the whole threaded bar? is that easy, looks like a fuel tank down job (allergic to the thought of that) or if I use a coupler to join the two threaded bar pieces will that affect my handbrake performance?
Cheers for any help as always.
