Hi,

I have just bought a van with a 2.0 GTI conversion which runs well, i was giving her a look over and i noticed that the secondary water expansion tank is empty.

Is this normal when this conversion has been done, i read on the normal engine that this should also be topped up ... but it looks like it hasnt seen any water for a while.

I ran mine without the 2nd tank for a couple of years.

If the top up tank is connected via a darlek cap to the expansion tank then it definately wants some coolant in there as the system helps itself to coolant if needed when it cools down via the two way darlek cap and provides somewhere for the coolant to expand into if totally full when hot
it is effectively the check that the system is full, all you have to do is look and if the top up tank is at the full level all is good, if it constantly goes down you know you have a coolant leak (usually onto exhaust) or a head gasket or similar issue

I run a mk 3 Golf 2.0 16v on an angle in my Doka using the diesel parts, I used the round header tank from the donor car. Never been a problem and been running it for 6 years now.
