BOD - 1.6TD JX - In over my head!

Leading on from the above post, my buzzer of doom issue has taking me way beyond my the basic skills (& tools) and I need help / opinions!

I have low oil pressure and am trying to investigate the source. Changed the oil / filter with no results. I've just now removed the sump and oil pump, is there anything else I should check for whilst it's all apart?

I'll replace the pump and seal with new given they are relatively cheap.

Here's a picture, does it look normal?:

Thanks

What were the numbers when you had oil pressure tested?

How many miles has it got on it and have you taken one of the shells off the bottom end to check bearings?

While you're in their, you could open the big ends and main bearings one at a time and check the condition of the bearing shells. Any significant wear there could account for low oil pressure.

Just make sure they go back the right way round.

Thanks for pointers. Just to be sure, the big end bearings are at either end of the cam shaft right?

If they need replacing, are they easy to do?

And the pressure figures are as follows:

Cold:
1000 rpm - 1.6 bar
2000 rpm - 2.4 bar

Hot:
1000 rpm - ~0 bar
2000 rpm - 0.6-0.9 bar.

Thanks

Nope, the Big end bearings are at the bottom of the connecting rods (seen in the picture), on which the pistons are on the other end.

The 'Main' bearings are also worth checking, they are the 5 caps which you can also see in the picture spaced evenly across the crank, the extreme left and right are the most obvious ones to find, with 2x bolts holding them on.

E D I T:

This is a bit easier to explain. Red are the Big-ends, Yellow are the mains.

Superb, but scary!

Have you got a torque wrench? when you take the big end bearings apart, you'll need one to put them back together. also make sure you give the sump gasket mounting face a really good clean, scrape of any old crud /sealant. In case you dont know, the big end bearings are just two halfs of metal(bronze bearing stuff)not ball race bearings, so not to scary to take apart. Get Matt or Chris to take a look?(mind you they might want to strip the thing to pieces before you can stop them!)

You do know that the big end bolts are stretch bolts?
And give the intermediate shaft a wiggle( up n down)as they wear out!
And check your oil pump for end float (.15 mm max) and check the gears for wear ( .2 mm max )

would you feel any movement if the big end bearing are shot, just by trying to feel any movement by hand? I've rebuilt a couple of dg/dj engines and even with 150k miles the big end bearings have not shown any wear at all. would be very odd to be worn if the engines only done 40K?.

Has anybody got a manual for the JX? I need to know the torque settings. Thanks.

As Dave Friday said. They are Stretch bolts so can only be used once! so you'll need some more. So just take one big and one main bearing apart to give you an idea as to the state of the rest . You can then see what the bearings look like and measure them with a Micrometer as they will have a wear limit measurement.

I think that given I didn't know what a stretch bolt was is good enough reason to put it all back together again!

OK, so a good friend came and helped me put the sump back on, new oil pump and sump gasket.

He pointed out that the 2nd con rod cap (is that right) from the left was clearly newer than the others. Could this be a bad sign? I think so.

The head gasket was replaced just a few hundred miles back, so maybe this too? (possibly as a consequence of failed head gasket?)

Nevertheless, I still have the same low oil pressure issues. So what next?...

• New engine - what choice?
• Re-con 1.6?
