What happened to the push rod?
has any other damage occurred to the rocker or lifter?

Depends what the damage is.
if the rods are not seated in the tappets you can punch bits out of the circlip groove and the clip can come out.
Alternatively you can bend the rocker.

they do know that your engine has hydraulic lifters I hope?
...and it's quite common for your engine to be tappety after a spell without being used.
this generally clears after a good run

it gets used most days and it just went very loud and tappity.mate at garage thinks it could be a problem with a con rod.he adjusted all of the tappits but just the one wouldnt adjust.

he said he push rods had lots of play and he had to compress the valves one at a time to take play of the rods.

Assuming he knew what he was doing, a drained hydraulic tappet will be spongy and can't be preloaded until bled.
they will bleed themselves but it takes a hot engine and a good thrash to do it.

In my experience one will often drain down when the engine is started and stopped without getting hot.

Hydraulic lifters require ONLY 1 and a 1/2 turns in from zero lash.
They rarely require adjustment, as they self adjust.
Hydraulic lifters will drain down occasionally, only persistent tapping after a 20 min run should be investigated.

If they were all loose and not spongy then it suggests that somebody has adjusted them for solid lifters and left a gap.
which will eventually destroy hydraulic lifters.

perhaps the mechanic can explain better if you ask him.

I would say yes, but your pre load has been messed with, and should be reset by the book first
