I've just came back from spain in my westy with a afn t.d.i conversion which I've had for four years with no problems until now.i was driving along when all the power and grunt went out of the van at first i thought it was the turbo so i checked all the hoses and pipes which were fine restarted the engine and you could here the turbo whistle ,but after driving for a minute or so the engine tone changes and all the power and grunt goes again any ideas??

Sounds like the ECU is cutting the boost demand from the turbo, it will do this if it isn't making the required boost for more than 60 seconds (I think it's 60).

Could be over or under boost so check the actuator is moving freely and pulling in completely at idle. They get holes in the diaphragm and don't pull in fully meaning lack of boost. Also the vanes in the vnt turbos can stick causing them to overboost but this is less common. Can you get vagcom connected for error codes?

when you turn it off and back on again the ecu 'reboots' so to speak so it starts clear of faults until the same situation occurs then it cuts power again

you need to plug in vcds to check for faults


most faults are caused by the maf, is that clean ? does it drive the same if you unplug the maf? is your air filter clean?
if the maf does not read enough air then the ecu determines all other fuelling and boost on the maf's readings so it just cuts down the fuel and boost to match the amount of air reaching the engine, sometimes it dont even show a fault as the ecu just assumes you are up a mountain and the air is thin

so if i buy a code reader off eBay are they ok. also will it come up with a code if the maf is not working. also where is the best site to get the codes from

the ebay ones seem to be ok for reading codes, not used one myself as i have full vcds, and google will bring up any code you put in

just been poking about the engine bay and spotted a split in a hose that comes from the turbo to the intercooler about 50mm in diameter there is a lot of oil all around it could this be my problem

cheers I've ordered a new hose off eBay just wondered is there any more benefit using silicone hoses as they seem to be more expensive
