Been replacing some of the old earth straps and don't know why but I thought that the starter should have an earth from the body/ bolts to the chassis ?. Am I right or wrong. ? .starts perfect ( touch wood ) except if it's really hot when on a run and then it's slightly lazy but only for a split second then it fires up .

It's earthed through the gearbox and the braided earth strap on the nose. Lots of people including myself, have fitted an extra one from the starter to the body/chassis, like you mention. If you do a search on here, you'll find threads on the subject of gearbox corrosion, due the way the starter is earthed.
I think this may only be the case on manual gearboxes and things might be different on automatics.
