Alternator bracket - problem - fixed

Last week my mechanic buddy carried out a temporary fix. One of the studs holding the alternator bracket had fallen out and the second stud had broken inside the engine block before I owned the van. He replaced the missing stud with a bolt, but the second broken stud has now fallen out. As my buddy no longer has a workshop, we have been trying to find a garage, with somebody who is confident to drill out the rest of the broken stud and fix the problem. We cannot find anybody prepared to do the job. Do you know anybody anywhere who might be interested in fixing this problem? The main issue is drill too deep and that's the engine block ruined. I'd like to get it out camping again! Cheers guys.

Pulled this stud out and the hole is 23mm deep
It doesn't look much more than that so I personally would not drill more than 20mm deep but that's plenty for an M8 16mm 2D helicoil + 4mm for the tap to clear drill tip etc.

Enough material to tap M10 and use an M10/M8 stepped stud also.

Alternator bracket - problem needs fixing

When I bought my van it had this Heath-Robinson additional bracket to hold the alternator arm, as my studs were shot too. It used the spare threaded holes on top of the engine to mount into. It was a bodge but it worked. Might be worth considering building a bracket until you pull the engine and drill the stud out.

Thanks for that info guys. I can pass that on.

Finally managed to track somebody down locally who is prepared to do the work. I can't get it in to be fixed until 15 August, but I can wait till then.

Got the van back today having been repaired by a skilled mechanic in W6. His work is spot on. I'm mobile again after 3 weeks of cadging lifts! :)

Just fitted on of these brackets to help support the alternator as I also have an iffy stud.

Hopefully this will finally address the problem of a loose alternator.
