hi all-
has anyone fitted an early model WBX exhaust box onto their subaru? like this:

seems like itd only be simple pipework needed, straight back from each header into the left and right inputs into the box, since all the complex bends etc are inside the muffler in this case.

just wonderin! Cant see much mention of it?

Something ive been looking at. Have you seen the Toyota MR 2 rear box . Ive been searching for details and pics , not much around, you can pick the box up relatively cheaply . Just an idea

i dont know what to do now.. bit of chicken and the egg. ill know more about it once ive got the van back with engine in, and have something to show an exhaust shop. but also dont want to drive very far with a temporary jerry rig noise cannon on the back

I was in the same situation as you. I was just learning to weld but thought why not have a crack at making an exhaust? My subaru engine came with the subaru manifold so i cut off both exhaust headers which bolt to the engine, acquired some 1.75 inch exhaust pieces from jp exhausts and began welding. So the drivers side exhaust header is welded to a small 90 degree bend which is in turn welded to a straight piece. I then cut a hole in the straight piece to allow the passenger side exhaust header to collect in the straight piece. I then used some longer 90 degree tubing, welded in a flexi joint, cut the flange off the old wbx tube which connects to the original wbx silencer and then attached it to the original WBX silencer. To support the silencer I made one of these out of square steel tubing http://subaruvanagon.com/conversion_ser ... xhaust.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and welded an exhaust strap to it. I also welded a piece of angle iron to the rear crossmember , welded a captive nut, attached another exhaust strap to the other end of the silencer and attached to a rubber exhaust mounting from ebay to the piece of angle iron. Nicely supported and works fine even though my welding is rubbish.

Sounds like a good solution to an expensive problem. Any pictures ?

i thought about that as it makes the pipe work easy, although not sure it would have the necessary airflow for my ez30 install.

also thought of using a couple of these joined together in series

then use two top pipes as inputs from the headers either side of the cylinder head and make a tail pipe come out either side on the other two bottom pipes

Due to lack of welding skills, I'll be heading to an exhaust shop for a measure up and fit 'while u wait'.

Only one sight unseen quote so far from MIJ exhaust in Walsall (not on my route) for full stainless £550 fitted. They look very good. So will drive to longlife in Stockport once it's running for a quote there (closer to home)

just to follow on from this, ive gone for an exhaust from Dai Williams. Hes a fine felow and helped me out with loan of a temp exhaust, and am due to go and collect it next week ish. Ill report back here with pictures. Its designed to fit with the rjes mount and the small car one.

Lovely daisyncro exhaust all fitted! Had a nice afternoon at dai's place yesterday while he fitted this version of his new design, the first one fitted.

I have a bit of an odd tow bar which interfered with the tail pipes, but theyre full adjustable (can be swiveled and 'widened' across the back) so that's why mine are pointing down a bit. Lovely quality and Dai is very particular about all the details.

yes, theres brackets running down from the alternator and power steering brackets, down to the back of the silencer which has a welded mating bracket, very strong. Mine has prototype bracketry, the finals will be part of the package.

Yes sounds great, discrete with a nice bit of 'throat' and subaru 'burble'. Andrew you'd be interested to see how much smoother it runs now too, since your test drive. Something about back pressures Im told

No heat shield, but there's a fair bit of space between anything critical. After an hour and a quarters drive there was no real warmth in the covers, but I'll be watching it over the next week's to see if its anything to worry about. Dai doesn't think so, he runs a very similar setup so that's good enough for me.
