Just wondering if someone could give me some advice on what fuel tank I need to buy for my van as the only ones I can seem to find say from 1985- and mines a 1981 ,, some have 48mm filler and some have 68mm filler so I'm a bit confused on what one I need ,, my van is a 1600 air cooled one (or was lol) but as I'm doing a Subaru conversion I thought I'd buy a new tank
If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great

81 would have originally been fitted with a 68mm metal filler neck. Later model then changed to a plastic 48mm neck with the corresponding sized holes in the tank to fit.
As the metal filler necks where prone to corrosion VW stopped making the 68mm neck and only sold the 48mm plastic neck with an adapter seal to fit the 48mm neck in the 68mm hole.
So you could have an original metal filler and tank
An original tank with a replacement plastic filler and adapter seal.
Or a replacement 48mm tank and filler.

Sorry but what tank will I need then ? as I'm happy to buy a filler neck to suit if I have to but don't want to buy the wrong tank and have it not fit ,, I can find them with various fill neck sizes but they all state from 1985- ,, will these ones fit if I buy a new filler neck to suit ?
Sorry if I seem dim but

A late tank will physically fit the van, as long as you use a late filler neck.

WHS....I think one or two replies missed your 'intension' for a Scuby transplant. I think you will need a late 'injection tank' which has a larger fuel outlet but smaller plastic filler neck size. Obviously you then need the 48mm grommet and plastic filler neck.
