Starter motor on the way out

My 1.9 dg vans starter motor clicks when I turn it over intermittently. If I crank it a few times it eventually kicks the starter into life but this is becoming ever more frequent and want to get it sorted before it packs up completely.
I have looked at all the usual outlets for a replacement and most say that the starter bush is not included. Can anyone give me any info on this bush? Is it something I'm likely to need and are they easy to swap out??

Cheers :ok

hi mate, the bush is like a 2 cm length of copper pipe!

It sits in a hole in the bell housing and supports the nose of the starter. In fact - I would spend abut a quid (Brickwerks) and change this first - your starter may be fine!

yes...I found it fiddly. Its a soft metal and deforms as it wears, and results in the starting problems you are experiencing.

oh - if you have a branch of TPS (trade parts spares) they may be able to help too.

Branches of GSF also have them in stock although its just possible the brushes are worn. I replaced mine for about a fiver (ebay). Could be the starter solenoid too.
