Hi all,

I have just purchased a 1980 Type 25 Hi-Top camper. It has the 1.6 CT engine which appears to be difficult to obtain info or parts for!

The engine is a re-con unit with 1500 miles on it.

I have noticed that when I start it up there is a knocking noise with the engine under load. It's quite loud and I'm a bit concerned about it.

The noise disappears and the engine runs nicely (and queitly) after about 1 to 2 minutes of driving.

I wondered if it could be the hydraulic tappets (I believe the CT has hydraulics?) but the noise is quite loud?

Does anyone have any ideas or remedies?

The camper is for a charity tour across europe which commences on the 4th of May! We're going to be doing some serious mileage and hence I need to make sure this is nothing that may jepodise our reliability...... check out our website for more info at www.charitytour.co.uk.

sounds like its ready for an oil + filter change, you should change this after a rebuild sooner than the recomended 5000..
if it goes a few mins after start up, i'd not worry
also, remember the oil in an Aircooled van works darn hard...
have you heard of GSF ?, theysell most Aircooled bits ?

I tried GSF for parts as I needed the 2 intake manifold rubber joiner pipes and the airbox to carb pipe.

They couldn't supply these as they have apparently stopped stocking most CT engine parts?

mmmmm, be a shame if they stopped..... have you tried Justkampers ???
alot of folks "upgrade" to a CU 1970 cc aircold engine, maybe thats why ??

might be worth putting a sout out on wanted, as folks who've changed may have spares kicking around

Oh dear.. a CT... well there are a few still about and most (as said) usually upgrade to the 2L Aircooled..

Yep sounds like the usual leaky tappet.. short runs dont help, need a 10 ninute run up the road to clear usually..

Yes its true, very few stock parts for these engines..
The best solution would be to pick up anopther engine thats complete, then you have a few spares to salvage and use all the good bits from each.
Inlet rubber.. take the old one to your local scrappy and see what bits you can find off other cars..

As for oil and changing.. do it regular and use a good 15w40 or 15w50 (VW's own Quantum, or castrol GTX)
try not to drive the thing too hard.. ie only 55mph and dont let the engine "lug" ie too high a gear, much better to let the engine "spin" on a light throttle, this will help to keep it cool..
Never just switch off after a run (ie on the motorway, or on a hot day)) pull up and let the engine run for a minute or 2 on a fast idle.. this will bring all the temperatures down before shutting off..

Oh and make sure all the tinware is in place correctly and the tinware seal is in good condition and in place..
