Gti Conversion Gearbox missing flywheel cover?

This VW Mk1 Gti 1.8 conversion has been done many years ago back when there was little info about online etc apparently (circ 1996), as such I am going back over it and double checking everything is OK. (Just checked fuel tank outlet was the 8mm not 12mm so changed that recently).

The gear box is a DU 4 Speed. If you look at this picture you can see there is no plate or cover to keep much off the flywheel. Is this an issue? I am worried muck will work its way in and possibly onto the clutch and generally cause problems? What cover do people use?

Cheers :ok

look for vw 020 gearbox upper cover plate. the $h!tplate doesnt cover that far out. the early mk1 and 2 020 gearboxes has a separate coverplate that covers that gap

I assume I will have to seperate the engine and box to install? Is it really worth the hassle?

You will be able to fit it easy when you put the new clutch in.
