Can anyone tell me whether there is a difference in fitting a 5 speed manual gearbox to a 1.9 DG engine from the 4 speed manual box ?
Cheers , Adam.

Yes, as far as I know different gear linkage and gear stick stick and box under linkage is different, otherwise box fits to engine the same.

Stay with the 4 speed.

maybe it's knackered and he has access to a 5 speed, but if not I'd agree, no real benefit that I can see.

My 4 speed box is fine ,may need new bushes though but other than that it's good . I was just curious what the difference between a 5 speed and a 4 speed box would be whether it would increase top speed and make it easier on the engine.

It doesnt mean you will have one more higher gear.

Covers no more than the 4 speed. I've got a 5-speed. Bigger wheels make more of a difference.

There is little or no difference.
Between 4 & 5 gear gearboxes.

I have heard it said 4 speed is a stronger gearbox, also 5 speed is more work going up and down the gears, finally reverse is where 1st is normally, 1st is where 2nd is normally, confusing to go between vehicles if you have others.

The final ratios are about the same both on 4 speed and 5 speed boxes. Esp. When they are off from the same type engine. The 1st is shorter and the steps between the gears are lower on the 5speed.
IMO If you are not driving fully loaded all the time then not worth to change a working 4spd to a 5spd box.

...and 5 speeds rot through at the mounting end from corrosion.
