How much fuel is in the tank?

Ever wondered how many litres the gauge is actually showing in the tank.
Filled with a completely dry new tank on level ground. As you can see the gauge movement is not linear the gauge moves less as the tank fills.

5lt not really usable.

Did you run out of money at 35l

Thanks interesting to see that from the top to bottom of the red is just 5L about a gallon, about 20miles, another 20 miles and you are empty

I learned the hardway that when I out the sender in the new tank I must have bent the arm, because mine stops when I hit red! But I do recall that there is a significant difference between 'running out' of fuel and what I emptied out of the tank!?

You might have an incorrect late sender with an early dash.

I replaced the tank and sender in my 2.1 DJ a couple of years ago.
Empty tank plus 25litres of fuel took the guage to the top of the red.

I got six litres out when I had that indication.

The problem is if you go up or down a long hill with that little in the tank it won't pick the fuel up until you are on the flat.

On our long runs to Cornwall from the Lake District the last hour or so of driving down to Gwithian/St Ives has the needle reading red to half full on each incline and bend........Last year I risked it and didn't chicken out and filled up just before we reached our campsite....at Gwithian I think I remember putting in just shy of two litres of the official tank capacity

The biggest unknown (in my experience anyway) is where "completely empty" is. Mine is dry somewhere above the red area so I find 1/4 tank is as low as I'm willing to go. Been caught twice like that. The guage is not that trustworthy at the best of times.

I found my needle roamed up and down the red zone. Then it coughed, so I knew it was empty.

Useful stuff :ok

Here's some related info that I recorded whilst tracing a fuel gauge fault a while ago. 3 points across the fuel gauge and the required voltage for that point.

Might be useful to somebody ?
