Van won't start

Hi All

My 2l T25 Aircooled won't start. Haven't driven it for a couple of weeks so the fuel in the carb float chambers has evaporated.

I've removed the air filter and poured some fuel down the carbs and normally after a couple of attempts it fires into life.

This time it fires up and dies almost straight away. Plenty of fuel in the tank, fuel filter clean. Doesn't appear to be pulling fuel through from the tank.

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers
Myles

Check if the fuel pump is pumping fuel. Check if there is another (blocked?) inline fuel filter.

Thanks for the reply.

Just the one filter, a little bit of crud in it so I fitted a new one, no difference.

The fuel cut off switches on the carbs are clicking off and on when activated. I guess that would suggest the original mechanical fuel pump is farked.

Hi all

Bought a facet electric pump. Wired it up to take a live (fused) feed from the blue wire on the alternator. Turn the ignition key engine turns over but nothing from the pump. Put A meter on the blue wire and no voltage.

Getting 12v at the 2 red wires but nothing from the blue.

Any suggestions?

Cheers
Myles

Hi again. Sorted it. The fuel line was dry so primed it first tried again and she fired up and now is running lovely.

One question, if I leave the van parked up for a few weeks am I going to have to prime it again? Was hoping with this electric pump I wouldn't have to do that, got fed up of chucking fuel down the carbs to get the mech pump to do its job.

That is the problem with wiring an electric pump that way, it won't start pumping until the alternator is charging ie the engine is running.
The best way to wire up an electric pump is to use a tachometric relay from a mechanical fuel injection car like the mk1 or 2 golf that way it will prime the pump by running for a few seconds when you first switch the ignition on then it won't pump until is sees a signal going to the coil ie it will start pumping as soon as the starter turns the engine over and keep pumping as long as the engine is running.

Or just add an extra couple of wires with a push-to-make switch so you can switch the pump on to prime the line if need be.

Thanks for the replies chaps. Glad the van is running again. Going to have to get some rubber washers to isolate the pump from the chassis, it's so loud - sounds like noisy tappets!
