So this conversion was done many years ago by a previous owner. It seemed to run fine as far as I could tell although at times had some fuel starvation and the pump was loud and hot!

I decided to buy a high quality replacement pump and whilst fitting this check that the fuel tank is indeed the correct larger outlet type. Using my crappy old calipers if appears the outlet is 8mm diameter (internal 6mm) The van was originally a DG engine so I assume the fuel tank was left in from this?

I entered my chassis number into Brikwerks website and it states "The fuel tank is the early type, with metal filler neck" but when I checked I have the plastic type with part number 251 201 121 D:

Any ideas what I should do?

Early or late, carb or injection tank. Sounds like you have a late carb tank and that will explain the small outlet. The tank can be converted to a 11mm outlet but you will need to remove the tank and let it dry out & vent all vapours for a few months before contemplating soldering in a larger pipe.

It's a specialist job unless you are competent and experienced. Not to be done lighly, but they do not go off BOOM like in the films (as I was told by a fireman) it will just go #whump# and possibly burst a seam. The acid test is to wave a naked flame near the outlet. If you are confident that it won't ignite anything, then proceed.

Yea I think it might be easier to simply replace it with a new injection tank and let the pump do its job easier.

On a side note I will now need to replace the fuel hose from the tank to the pump, anyone know what size hose I need / can use? Is it simply 12mm hose or is do I need to step up for a Bosch (171906091A) pump?
