Wondered Whats in Your Tank

Though I would cut open an old tank to have a butchers.
As you can now see the fuel is picked up (and returned) from the well in the bottom of the tank which is covered by a metal plate to stop the fuel from surging out of the well when cornering/braking/going up and down hills.
The well is filled only via the hole in the top.
When the tank is near empty the four baffles direct the last remain fuel swishing about over the hole.
The fuel sender float sits in the front left corner of the tank hence why it is prone to variations when the tank is not level, low fuel reading when going up hill etc.

Thanks for doing that, very interesting
I still don't understand why fuel does not pour out the outlet when tank is low but can be sucked out by the pump?

Because the outlet is higher than the well. It will only come out if the fuel is higher than the outlet unless you stick a rubber hose on the outlet with the end lower than the well and syphon it out.

It makes you wonder if theres any scope for improvement given that most vehicles don't have such vague fuel gauges.

I was looking for some internal pictures, these were found on the Samba, the owner had bought a new tank, cut his old one up
Filter kept clogging prematurely (second picture).

Its rather unfortunate that water pipes and gear change mech goes above it as otherwise a larger plastic tank might be a better solution.
