What stonechip?

After replacing the rear arch I need to cover the new repaired area with something similar to the original VW white 'foamy' stonechip stuff that I scraped away/lost/set fire to when welding.

I've looked all over the place and can only seem to find is sprayable (rattlecan) paint, this is not what I want, I want something thick and brushable that I can really work into all the corners and build up in places I know are vulnerable to damage.

I dont know how comparable it will be to the original sealer but i'd imagine if you want a thicker coating your probably looking for a coating to be put it on with a schutz gun, loads of manufacturers make the 1 litre schutz screw on type bottles/tins(3M, wurth, Grainger etc), how comparable each product is i cant tell you as i will be following in your footsteps in next coming months, planning to hit the entire underside of the van once i have all the welding finished.

Some manufacturers have a stonechip type and also an underseal so you might be better looking at the products specifications on the manufacturer page, you probably cant go wrong with the 3M stuff i would imagine, but that might be pricier compared to other manufacturers, cheapest i think i have seen them is about £5 a tin for graingers online if your buying a few, 3M stuff would be more i would imagine, some schutz guns also come with small hoses so you can try and get it into cavities/awkward area

I've never Used a Schutz gun before but it looks like it might do what I'm after.

The original stuff appears to have air bubbles inside, looks like the cross section of an Aero chocolate bar lol I guess this means it was probably applied with some sort of air gun, I suppose this will probably make the stuff go further when it's a small percentage of air.

Will have to see what sort of area it covers per can, I've got a few other problem areas I need to cover such as front steps so may need to invest more.

There is a guy on youtube (diyautoschool) using one and he has a video where he uses a 1 quart can (american, so just over a litre) on a big yank tanks inner rear arch area and 1 can more or less covers the entire inside of that, so i'd be guessing anywhere from 6-10 cans for the whole van depending on how heavy you want to apply it

Found the Video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPCR5sxa1k0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I don't think he likes dylan that much :rollin

Anyway, The whole underside of the van has been coated at some point in the past, whether that was in the factory or not I don't know. This existing coating is very thick in some areas, it's some of these areas that I've had to remove to do the work I've done. After searching about online what I've found is that the original stuff was probably 'Dinitrol', which typically is much more expensive then the 3M or MIPA or other equivalents.

I'll probably punt for the 3M, a couple of litres to do the patches in the 2 arches I've already done and some other areas.
