Squeek in gearing

Hello all,

I have a very annoying squeek in my gear shifting, mostly from gear 1 to 2. I can't seem to trace where it is coming from. Is this likely to be in the front housing or rather in the back towards the transmission? I can see my boot rubber is torn towards the rear of the gearshifts rods, but I am not sure if that is the problem. Obviously it needs grease somewhere but I was wondering what the best way is to diagnose? It's a 1980 t25 Aircooled 4 speed.

Many thanks for helping out.

Look in the WIKI - everything you need to know in there. Once you figure out the different sections it should be easy enough to find cause.

Hey CovKid,

Thanks! Sorry for that, should have seen earlier myself, these steps surely will solve the problem.

Good to have someone up top working the gears while you slide around underneath. The WIKI gearshift sections may seem complicated but they're very much a 'real world' hands-on explanation - front to back. There are slight variations between models but the principles are the same.
