I'm having mega problems fitting my bushes into their slots. Anyone who has done this will know what I'm on about. BTW it's a t25 1998 and it's the front upper bush...the originals were spot welded in place.

You mean the upper wishbones? On a 1988 van?

Yeah thems the ones. Finally fitted..still don't fully understand the importance of the spot weld though.

So that the bush outer doesn't rotate in the wishbone. It will without a spot weld. Metal on metal would soon finish off both.

Club hammers and the like - er no, unless you're desperate. Comes out easy in a vice, does it squarely and you don't end up denting or chipping paint off the wishbone.

Tool he uses is easy to make. I've got one. Well worth getting one of those cheap ALDI arc welders (£40) when they come up if you don't have a mig or access to one. Useful tool for odd jobs like that.

You'll also need to realign wheel. The correct position for the front wheel is bolt upright (VW specify 0 degrees +1 or -1 max) so if you're on level ground (and you need to check), you can use a spirit level across the wheel rim to get the adjustment right. Just aim for completely vertical. The bolt through the wishbone uses concentric 'offset' washers to allow for this. If you don't do it, the front wheel will sit out at the bottom by default which will cause premature tyre wear on the inside of the tyre in no time. Its fairly easy to spot a T25 with top wishbone bush issues if you look at one from the front. The wheels sit out. Squeaks and play are other signs. Changing wheels and tyres can also affect the adjustment.

Haynes make a meal of it, but thats the process.
