Only gone & stripped my sump thread. Have been really careful for years but have noticed the last couple of oil changes the thread was going. Anyway - does anyone know where I can get some 0.8D inserts? I believe the 1.0D's are a tad long?

You can cut them down but I have not tried it, I just stuck a 1D in, just means you never drain every last drop of oil.

Cheers itchy - ever tried a M15 repair kit? I know they're probably not as good as a helicoil but they avoid the dangers of wonky drilling etc. I don't have a workshop as such so as a quick fix (going on hols next week) could be a stress-fee alternative.

its not too bad to do
jack the van so you can get a drill in
preferably use a battery drill they are mire controllable
get a piece of plastic tube that just fits the recess
cut the tube dead square check it
use the tube as a guide to getting the drill and tap square

use grease to catch swarf
flush with oil oil or cheap oil before refilling

Gonna wimp out I'm afraid & get a M15 repair kit. Can't face the stress of helicoiling a few days before I go away. I'll defo do a proper job when I get back & I like the plastic pipe to keep the bit straight. Don't like that emergency plug at all - how the hell do you get it back out again?

M14x1.5 helicoil drill size is 9/16" or 14.3mm
if you drill or tap anthing bigger than that forget fitting a M14 helicoil later.

M16x1.5 drill size ( common mod rather than helicoil) is 14.5mm drill size.

So once I've tapped a M15 I'm still ok to put a M16 helicoil in at a later date if necessary?

but I do know you can't add metal back on so think hard about drilling larger sizes.

A lot of people stress about drilling this hole and I reckon it's because nearly everyone has experience of drilling steel whereas few of us need to drill aluminium. Because it's so soft, you have much greater control of the bit, much slower rpm, thus much less risk of the bit wandering or not being exactly perpendicular. I've said this before, but I genuinely believe it to be one of those tasks that is so much easier than people envisage.

How did you remove the driving tang on the insert? Guess that you left it on which is risky, it could fatigue and drop off for the oil pump to suck up. The mesh should catch it, but even so...
