My 1.9 water boxer has been running great for a while now hence no posts, but this weekend while going over a smàll but high speed bump that gave the van a jolt it decided to cut out and will not idle when warm after choke has cut out .
I'm thinking vacuum leak but can't find a leak .anyone have any ideas ?

Mike.

I'd say it's possible that you've dislodged the wire to the idle shut-off valve (ringed in the photo):

This needs a continuous live feed to keep the valve open - this ensures that there's a trickle of fuel even when the throttle is closed. I'm guessing that the engine can run with this valve closed if the throttle is partially open, which is what the fast idle mechanism of the choke will do.

I've just spotted that you have a DF, and I think that means you don't have the Pierburg carburettor. If that's the case then my photo (and my theory) will be no use to you.

ok guys I've checked the idle shut off valve and have power there when the engine cuts out,I've checked the vac pipes and can't find any obvious leaks. As i said is it just a coincidence that this happened after hitting a hard bump jolting the van or has it upset something.

this is annoying as the engine was running fine and still does until the choke comes off then cuts out then tries to idle.
van drives fine otherwise as long as i keep the revs up a little with my foot.
the carb thàt is fitted is a pierburg 2e .any othr ideas would be helpful .

When you say it won't idle have you tried increasing the tickover?

Try checking your distributor hasn`t shifted, the first outing of our van a very similar thing happened, I think the previous owner had a last minute tinkle with it and didnt tighten the clamp up tight enough

I wouldnt start fiddling with any mixture screws as they were sound before

Bit of a late follow up but the problem seemed to have resolved its self. after i turned the tickover up to compensate for the lack of only to find that after a trip out and yet another big bump ! on return the engine was revving it's nuts off while supposed to be ticking over , dropped the tickover back to normal ànd completed 290 miles this weekend without missing a beat . Still not found the cause .
