Picked up some cheap Pastel White at an autojumble.. It's ICI Belco cellulose. My pickup needs a few rusty spots sorting out... Will the Belco react with the original VW T3 paint ? or with rattle-can (acrylic ?) primer ? Any tips on how I might use this stuff appreciated..

Providing your paint is still oe then it'll be OK. Your biggest problem will be the type of thinner used. Some of it sold as thinner is little better than cheapo gun wash and you will likely get bloom issues ( it looks milky ) so try and buy premium thinner. Fast thinner is just that so not ideal in warm air temp and slow isn't great on a cold day and gun wash is quite aggressive too so I'd avoid that.

Putting celly over acrylic I think works but not the other way around, one or the other,can't remember try a sample first.

Lastly, many people come unstuck because they apply their top coats over primer that's not properly dried so the thinner solvent in the top coat has a pop at the still uncured solvent in the primer and they clash. So, light coats of primer that are allowed to dry out, then light coats of colour. Flat the 2nd to last top coat with say, 1200 grit and some soap and apply your last coat and polish it up once its dried out. I used to wait a couple of days before I cut it but its up to you. Dont use anything with ammonia in it as it scorches the paint

Grew up on celly ,it don't like much except itself lol.it will cover oe, but again needs celly u coat etc can't recall tipping it on acrylic though ,we did use a lot of non sand anti bleed and such , hey try it nowt to loose but as said unfetcoats need to be Dry ,and best thinner is ££

It's the other way around - Celly doesn't like going over acrylic.

Thanks all, I'll be careful with it then. I may just repaint the dropsides with the celly once I've got the right primer for it and use acrylic for the local repairs on the rest of the pickup.

Cheap thinners are ok , just make sure you do it on a day with low humidity.

A lot of things "will do" but past experience has shown not to be the case,cheap for prime best for tops
