Club 80-90 Forums

Hello all,

I'm based in Manchester and wondering if there's such a thing as a tool club in the area. I'm sure tool sharing happens informally, but I thought I'd pose the question to see what mechanisms there are for sharing outside friendship groups and whether there's any interest in setting something up.

The thought occurred to me after seeing a post on the T25 Group on facebook about buying a MIG welder and I thought that perhaps it could be beneficial to many with the inclination for DIY to either collectively own a good MIG welder or to be able to access one (e.g. if someone owns one perhaps people could contribute a bit of money in exchange for borrowing it). Same applies to other high value tools, but perhaps with variations where wear and tear of the tool isn't as much of an issue.

Anyways, this is just an idea that I'm floating and would love to hear whether people thing it's viable and also would love to know what actually exists. Also, I acknowledge that there would be quite a few details for this to work properly, but with the right will .....

I would be very much up for this, i'm in Manchester too.

There's a few areas of welding I need done before the MOT in September and would love to be able to do it myself with help (I currently have zero welding knowledge).

Nice one James. I might post this on some of the FB group to see if we can garner a bit more interest and then perhaps arrange to get together for a drink/coffee and a natter to see how best to make it happen.

I also have no welding experience, but am quite mechanically minded so I think a bit of practice will get us up to speed and hopefully we'll find someone with experience too!

I guess we need to make sure to think of the second, third and fourth rules of tool club and make sure to differentiate it from any sordid activities as pointed out by the other posters!

This is a great idea. I was thinking of going on a welding course at our local college until work got in the way. A tool and knowledge club would be great

Be cautious about arranging this sort of thing via the Internet. I'd suggest meeting in a neutral public place before showing each other your tools?
