Tappet adjustment after rebuild.

Hi Fellas. Story so far.... My 1.9dg was fully rebuilt last month. Initially et up as Haynes says with two turns on the tappets positive (against the retainers). Has been running fairly well, especially after 300 miles. We went in the garage for the initially check over and oil change. All was good. Put 10/40 in and adjusted the tappets to 1.5 turns positive which is more recommend. However, she was running very lumpy with some intermittent and loud knocking noises. We drove away and about 100 yards up the road the oil buzzer came on but I continued as I assumed the oil was still running around the engine and hadn't had time to trigger the sensor. After driving for 1 mile, the engine cut out mid gear change and seemed to stick. We managed to turn it over by pushing in gear, oil and coolant levels are good and we managed to turn her over via the ignition but again, very lumpy. Is there any experienced folk who could gibe some much needed advice! Cheers
