The purpose of this pump is to circulate coolant through the oil/water heat exchanger (commonly referred to as an oil cooler) at the base of the oil filter once a hot engine has been shut down. This is to counter act the heat soak from the turbo into the oil.

Not sure of the wiring but I believe it uses the temperature sender on the side of the cylinder head to detect high temps and is wired to run once the engine is switched off. It is also triggered when the starter motor is cranked, just to ensure it does not seize up.

On my syncro it was also connected to a relay in behind the LH tail lights and also an air blower to pass cool air over the turbo body.
