I need to get running on petrol again. Does anyone know the above or can anyone recommend someone else in London?

Somebody told me that Terry's only touch air cooled these days, but you could call them to check. Jacks Garage in Ladbroke Grove might be a better option.

Thanks for the info, I'll give Terrys a bell. Heard Jacks is really pricey. I was toying with getting the carb done properly by Bromyard but its a lot of cash and it may be something else causing the problem.

Give James Wotton a bell at Vee Dub Performance as he maybe able to help/advise. Based in Welling, so not too far. Says air cooled, but is happy to look at W/C as well:

Terry's Beetle emailed to say they only do Aircooled up to 1979. I'l drop Vee Dub a line. Has anyone used them?

Got an email from James saying he doesn't touch LPG. I've emailed him back saying its the petrol side that's playing up. Haven't heard anything back yet. Fingers crossed

Couldn't this thread have been left in General chat?

Definite no from Veedub. This is the thing that gets me down. Trying to find someone who knows what they're doing less that a couple of hundred miles away who can look at it within three months or not be a prima donna about it working on it. I think I might now look for for a t25 with a more modern engine or even a newer camper altogether.

I understand how you feel. Since my local garage, that preferred working on older vehicles closed last year, it is now a nightmare trying to find competent people who want to work on classic motors. I too will be moving on to a newer van in a year or two. A shame but that's life down in these parts. :(

VW made things quite simple for the enthusiast.
I found it very satisfying to learn and complete small tasks with the aid of other enthusiasts and specialist help.
If you're not trained then fixing the problem requires elimination, sometimes that proves expensive.
Fellow enthusiasts can at least narrow that list down.

Your summary is not the first time I have read about giving up and buying van which requires less input.
Shame really.

I am coming to the conclusion that learning to do as much as possible "DIY" is the only solution in London.

I am happy to travel up to Grantham for planned work but let's face it a 2 hour journey and 2 month waiting list isn't going to work when you have immediate running problems and a holiday coming up.

I have been on a steep learning curve but having had some minor successes I can relate to the feeling of satisfaction when you manage to fix something yourself, and gradually the confidence increases. But also lots of frustration when you lack the experience and go on a dozen wild goose chases before finally pinning down the problem. And it all takes time, which isn't easy if you have a day job/family etc. Plus anything more involved such as engine-out jobs, you're a bit stuck - unless you are a rare Londoner with a driveway... (and confident enough to drop the engine - which I wouldn't be .. yet)

So the search continues for a really trusted garage for these vans in the capital...

That's right. Over the years with help on here I've tackled quite a few jobs but I'm working very long hours now and don't have time to do bigger jobs

Absolutely and without a workshop or driveway, anything bigger than minor stuff is not an option. If you are working full time as well, keeping a classic vehicle up to scratch is difficult. Add extra modifications like LPG and the problems of finding a garage down here, prepared to sort things out, becomes seriously difficult. However, I do hope you resolve your van problems. In the meantime, you may need to use the expensive Jack's Garage to get you going again, so you can enjoy using your van. :?
