Hi, new to this forum, just purchased a 1983 t25 1.9 with 287000 miles on the clock. the clutch is just starting to slip but I am unsure if it's original engine and box or a replacement with so many miles. I can see no identification marks on the gearbox. How can I identify what size flywheel and clutch is fitted as I believe that there are 2.
Are there any tell tale differences to help me rather than strip and measure the size? Many thanks

It would normally depend on the engine number, but anything can get changed over the years. Is it a DG or DF engine code?

There's no way to tell much of anything after all these years ... drop it out and measure it if it's slipping and knackered anyway you've got to swap it.

Thanks, was hoping there was an external difference to see, so I could order the replacement before stripping it out and then having to wait for a replacement.

There is plenty to keep you busy for 1 day while the clutch arrives, you could probably have it same day if you line up a motor factor and have the box off by mid morning, how do you think garages get your car fixed same day?

I am not even sure which engine i have . The Engine code appears to be vw logo .469 not what i expected and does not match anything i can find??

week 46 1999 I think your engine built, Polish VW, is it Poznan plant ? I believe, may have initials of builder and date stamped on the heads
the only way you could tell when they were delivered they had a paper sticker usually on the top of right head, that had the part number on and from that you could tell which engine code but after 17 years it won't be readable and if you try to clean it the ink rubs off
chances are it's 228mm if a DG from 1999 as they came with flywheel fitted and you'd have been mad to have swapped back to old 215mm one if fitting a new engine a new clutch kit would have been only 5% of the cost, bet it's a LUK one

Never take shots at someone who is trying to help, especially someone being as helpful and knowledgable as you are. I assume your pic is week 6 2002.

Chances are it's a DG, seen a coupls of DF vans that have DG VW recons, my guess if they didn't bother doing DF's towards the end but may be wrong.
What carb do you have? Pierburg or Solex? that will indicate if van was origionally DF or DG.

Carb is pierburg. Heads have 2 stickers on 1 i believe is warning that it has hydraulic followers that dont need adjusting, or maybe its warning the other way. The other is advising 19mm plug size.
