Headlights arn`t wired through relay as standard. There are fuses for each beam though, so check the fuses first. Then start looking at the switch and seeing where you have feeds to.

Early of late `van? Ceramic fuses or later blade types? Any water into the footwell problem, coming from a leaking screen?

thats interesting,by the way non ceramic fuses on this 86 1.9 liesuredrive, will start off at the headlight switch and work back from there, interestingly i get one left full beam come on with headlight switch in the off position, which i put down to a headlight bulb being faulty,at any rate i am steadily working through the posts to find any other answers, but appreciate any answers posted here please.vw love it

Headlight switch and dash-lite dimmer part of it can be troublesome, maybe get a good second-hand one for an easy trouble-shoot?

also chack the feed from the ignition switch across to the headlight circuit at the fusebox, as well as the connector plugs inline

we have success after sandpapering the earth connector behind the fuse box, the fault has been sorted thanks to all those who pointed me in the right direction to solving the fault.vw love it love it
