I bought a dash cam but I have a problem, my cigar lighter is always live irrelivent as to the ignition being on or off I need to wire it so it's only live when the ignition is on so I can leave the dash cam constantly plugged in any suggestions would be appreciated. I no longer smoke six years almost, so don't need it for anything other than my satnav and dash cam.

Thanks in advance.

What spec have you got Caravelle etc? Have you got a early or late electric system?
I think most cigarette lighters are retro fitted so you could rewire it to the ignition powered fuses. (After the X relay). If it's an early system you could put the wire directly on to the spare terminals on the fusebox.
I would personally wire a two pin plug direct off the fusebox. Cut the cigarette lighter plug off the dash cam and fit the mating plug. That way you keep your cigarette lighter available for other stuff and you can unplug the dash cam if necessary.

I fitted a dashcam a year or so ago.
I didnt want the plug sticking out of the dash all the time or the worry that it might shake loose.
The cigarette lighter plug housed the 12V to 5V regulator. I opened up the plug, and fitted the regulator board into a small plastic box from Maplin ( other suppliers are available and cheaper)
I then wired the regulator to a switched live with an inline fuse for good measure.
