How'dy it's a tall one but would anyone know the thread gauge figure of an inlet manifold stud on a 2.0 CU Aircooled? I have stripped one and looking to helicoil it but need to know size and thread count before I purchase one

Thanks

You need to buy a helicoil kit like this.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Brand-New-XTo ... SwPe1T9Mim" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Use the supplied drill to open up the hole making sure you drill the hole straight.
Use the tap to cut the new thread. Preferably use some cutting oil as lubrication.

Screw in the new helicoil insert using the supplied tool.

If necessary break off the tang from the helicoil.

......that brings me to my next question! is it possible to do it with head in situ? I'm not that confident to start "popping off the head" at the moment

Thanks herb/ folks :ok

Yes you can no need to remove the head. But because of clearance issues with the bodywork it is better with the engine removed or swung down clear of the body.

No worries I'm going to attempt it in situ I can see I will be restricted with the engine panel think I have a 90 degree chuck somewhere, the helicoil was ordered last night just after your reccomendation so just waiting for the bugger to turn up. i think fresh studs and copper nuts wouldn't go a miss. Thanks again
