Two nagging queries

Ciao,

I'm not very mechanically minded, but I think I know what the source of my two van problems are. The van is a petrol 1.9 DG circa 1986.

Before the engine has warmed up properly, when criving off in 1st there is a sharp drop in power before it picks up again sometomes causing the engine to stall. Once fully warmed up it doesn't seem to happen.

Is this a fault with the vacuum advance on my dsitributor?

The second problem is there is a horrible high pitched grinding noise when she is first started up, again this seems to go away once she is warmed up.

Is this worn bushes on the alternator?

Any informed replies gratefully welcomed.

The first maybe, but could many other things...

The second, if its a screaming, its simply the fan belt slipping as the battery needs charging up quickly. It gets low overnight and then after a re-start. Check charging voltage, tightness of belt and belt wear and battery's ability to hold charge

I have a missing thermostat in my van.

During the summer it was fine, but now it's gotten colder I get what you where describing about the drop of power in 1st.

Have a look see if you've got one in there !

problem one could be carb related. Check vacuum advance as best you can by conecting timing light (you have?) and revving engine to see if timing mark moves with revs, also attatch a tube and suck see if diaphram is leaking (you will feel vacuum lessing with tongue if you hold it) . listen for whistling sounds in engine bay to islolate vacuum leaks.
