Help Please??


I have a 1.6td (1988) T3/25 and have a horrible feeling the engine has "cooked" as I seriously over heated when the alternator belt snapped. It is being looked at soon to see if it is just a head skim and gasket job BUT --- if it isn't does anybody know a good source for a second hand engine please? Maybe put a 1.9td instead if it is not too much hassle. Van currently has a 4 speed box - if the engine is changed is it a major job to put a 5 speed in?. Thing is I live in France now so getting it to one of the UK based experts is not gonna be cheap. Any help greatly appreciated.

Are you sure it is bugered? I have "cooked" a few motors in my time and have been very lucky over the years.
Unless you are pee'd off with that particular engine I can't see any harm in replacing the belt and see how it runs. Unless of course it seized or rattled to a stop.

Was talking to a man this afternoon who owned a 1500 Beetle and said his fanbelt went when he was on holiday and it overheated so much, when he lifred the engine hatch, the engine was actually glowing red in places with plugs melted away. After it cooled down, he put non standard plugs in from a local garage and turned the key. Not only did it start, he drove over 100 miles home. You may have cooked it but mine recovered from a serious overheat so fingers crossed for you. The oil will be shot, but you may be lucky.

Thanks for the reply. Local guy is gonna take a look and see if it's the head gasket which is knackered. If so not such a disaster and fixable. It certainly was hot!! Have put a new belt on and it will not start but does at least turn over. It's going to see the doctor early next month. Bits can be a problem locally but luckily JK delivers to France

Not 100% sure as it was running and does not seem to have seized completely. Changing belt didn't fix it bit at least it turns over. Might be a simple as head gasket change hopefully. I'll know soon enough

Hi and thanks for the advice - especially re head skimming. The annoying thing is the head is quite new - only done about 10k km at the most.

Hopefully it'll get away with head gasket change and a few prayers

I did read on here somewhere that it is not advisable to skim the head. I'm sure someone will be along soon and explain why.
I think the consensus was that it would probably benefit you getting a second hand head (known good one) probably cheaper than getting a skim.
I'm following this as I think I cooked mine the other day, waiting for the right belts to arrive in Spain before I can go any further.
