Main beam won't stay on

Hi all

I have an 82 2l Aircooled van.

When I pull the stalk for main beam it will flash but won't stay on.

I can hear the relay clicking, not sure if the relay is standard or a mod by a previous owner.

Mainbeam has worked previously but the van has been stood for 6 months since.

Any ideas?

Cheers
Myles

Just sorted exact same problem on my van - sticky switch.

Image

The white nylon pin in the switch cover (to the right in photo) moves up when you pull the switch stalk towards you, and pulls up whichever side of the toggle in the main body of the switch is down. When you let go the stalk, the switch cover slides back down, and the pin re-centres.

Except, if the switch has not been cleaned for donkey's, and is coated with sticky, congealed muck, the pin does not re-centre, and stays to one side, so it won't toggle between dipped and full.

Take the switch out - steering wheel off, steering colum cowlings off, remove three wiring connectors, remove three screws holding combined wiper and indicator stalks, lift off of steering column and retire to kitchen table. Carefully separate the two stalk assemblies (held together by two plastic prongs and the indicator stalk hooked over the fullbeam switch slide.

The switch body can be opened by carefully prising open the four plastic clips around its edge with a small screwdriver or penknife blade. Take care to note the positions of all the parts, which are only held together by the closed body. Take photos! Then dismantle, clean and reassemble with a tiny amount of silicone lube.

Good luck!

Just to update. Removed the plug from the indicator/main beam stalk, checked with the meter to make sure I was getting 12v as and when required, which I was.

Expected to have to strip the switch but when I reconnected the plug all is now working. I guess it must've been a dirty contact.
