I have recently picked up a camper with the 1.6td jx engine. I drove it home over 150 miles and everything was fine, no smoke and as much power as you would expect.
The van was sat on the drive for a week before I started it again. This time it began to smoke after a few seconds and didn't stop until it took it out for a spin about 15 minutes later.
I have had a quick look underneath and there is oil dripping from where the turbo meets the exhaust. I have pulled the intake hose off and this is clean and dry as is the compressor side of the turbo.
What is the best way to diagnose where this oil is coming from? I sort of hoping it is the turbo and not something more serious.
First time poster, think I'll be on here quite a lot if the first three weeks of ownership are anything to go by.

Do you have any play in the shaft up and down movement side to side?

I had a quick wiggle and the shaft play seemed fine to my untrained eye. I won't get chance to recheck this today but will have another look tomorrow.

Ok, so I have taken the turbo off this morning. The oil is definitely coming from the turbo itself as both manifolds are dry as is the air intake into the turbo.
The shaft does have a bit of play in it but I have to wiggle it quite hard to get it to move. I'm not sure if this is normal or not? It has no play front to back though.
I am now wondering whether it could be an issue with the oil drain. This was not blocked and when I disconnected it from the sump, oil flowed out freely however it does only have a tiny drop from the turbo to the sump. Is this usually the case? I presume it must be as the angle of the turbo is determined by the manifold it attaches to.
Probably going to get the turbo tested this week but if it sounds like I'm missing something obvious please let me know.
