Solex34 pict4 carburettor

Apologies if this is on wiki, I've tried but failed to get the answers I need there!
I have a 1.6 air cooled 1981 engine with a solex34 pict4 carburettor that is not working as it should. I ordered a kit online, removed and cleaned the carb to then find the kit wasn't correct after all...
Spoke to JK and have tried VW heritage, neither do the correct kits and apparently those carbs are v rare (originally California import?) so no replacements are made now. I can't find one on eBay but there is a conversion kit I advertised on eBay that apparently allows a 30 or 31 pict to be put on a 34 manifold.
What is the general advice here - I could buy the conversion kit and try a different carb altogether, make my own gaskets and try to work with the carb I have, send away to a company for refurbishment (although none of them seem to advertise working on a pict 4), or are there any other decent carbs out there to replace the Solex pict 4 that could work without me having to get a new engine?!
Help!!
Thank you for any help you can offer....I'm new at this so go easy!
