LOUD KNOCKING FROM REAR

So took the van out for a drive earlier 1.9 DG and after about 10min of driving a loud knocking noise sounds like possible bearing failing coming from the rear off side but not convinced. I have checked the hex bolts on the drive shafts which are tight there's no movement on the shafts only in and out by a couple of cm's which I believe is normal. The wheel spins freely and had no movement and doesn't make any noise. I'm a little confused now as out of things to check the noise only happens when it's driving as soon as I put the clutch pedal down it stops. Possible cv joints gone maybe? How would I check them?
Thanks in advance.
Steve

Does it only happen under power when driving?
if you are coasting with foot off accelerator but in gear and clutch engaged is it still there?
Is it a daily/regular driver or is this one of ths first outings of the year?

More so when under power but when coasting with clutch engaged it is still there as soon as clutch is disengaged and not in gear no noise.
It's not a daily drive but driven at least twice a week to keep things moving.

Mine did that when one cv joint was dry. It knocked like someone hitting a bell with a sledgehammer!

Try pushing the drive shaft in and out of the cvs as much as it will go say 20 times to both extremes, this can relocate grease if that's the problem.
I fixed a tonydata's van that way last year.

If it's a pop top check you didn't shut the wife in when packing up from camping - common mistake apparently

Thanks for the advice itchyfeet been out done what you said and also added a bit more grease to them with quite an intricate cake icing syringe adapted to what I needed it for took it out for 30 min and no noise so fingers crossed this is sorted for a while.
