I have a 87 1.9 watercooled DG auto.had it about 18mths put new starter motor on but sounds rough when starting.
all info from this site pointed to poss drive plate cracked.have had van into garage gearbox dropped and drive plate fine but torque plate had a bit of damage on a couple of teeth. these have been dressed and gearbox put back.van sounds the same.once started van is fine and goes into gear no problem.
1. would you just drive van and live with it
2. find a torque converter and replace
3. any ideas ?

Did they check the bearing inside the starter and the condition of the starter cog? This starter doesnt have a pilot bearing in the bellhousing like the others , all the load goes onto the bigger than usual shaft bearing in the starter. This could be checked and cleaned and re greased etc? Other than that its getting the torque convertor checked out.

come to think about it I had a golf auto once with the same gearbox and that made a noise like stirring corrugated iron while the starter was operating but was fine otherwise. I never did find out what that was as some uninsured bozo wrote it off!!!!
