Ive just taken this van on, and actually haven't picked it up yet, but the guy who sold me it, has just given me this piece of information...

The Van is a 1988 2100cc.

Any opinions as to why this would be the case would be greatly received.

Cheers

Charlie

Most general issues you are likely to need to research are already covered on the forum either in the huge archives of previous threads you can search, or in the 'Wiki" accessible from the top of the page. From the Wiki, check this out, for a start:

https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Ge ... reluctance" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Your problem could potentially be caused by any part of the system from worn components inside the gearbox to linkages to shifter mechanism to clutch to lack of oil or old / wrong oil. You won't be able to start diagnosing it until you drive the van as an eBay seller will never tell the whole truth. Ask formoney off for this if you decide to bring the van home - most gear selection problems are relatively inexpensive and easy to fix (with help diagnosing from this site) but a gearbox rebuild would cost up to £1000 and there's no way you'll be able to diagnose that from a quick test-drive.

Thank you very much for the reply.

I have now done a decent search, and read the wiki. Looks like it have have been a too big gear stick...

Got some Money off and a load of camping gear thrown in so chuffed!

Thanks again for taking the time to reply to a newbie.

Cheers

Great result, well done and a hearty congratulations for taking the plunge. Much fun awaits you - I love the water boxer motor, the old-school flat-4 sound and so far the every-day reliability (compared to the old air-cooled lumps), the good heating and the huge power. (The last bit was a lie!)

Can't believe that anyone would fit a gear knob that would stop them changing gear, that's cretinous. A result that there is no other issue though.

Lots of tinkering and servicing can be done very easily at home when you get brave enough - oil changes for engine and gearbox are simple and many of the engine ancillaries are very easy to access and swap as well. The cooling system is pretty complex and unusual but it works fine and all components are readily available and pretty easy to replace as well.

One thing you might want to consider straight off the bat is inspecting the fuel lines (and filter) very carefully and swapping any that look remotely dodgy, including the short ones in and out of the carb. Running from the front tank all the way back to the motor in both directions they are more prone to wear and failure than those on more conventional vehicles. Again, an easy job that only needs a screwdriver to insure you from the sadly fairly common dangerous fuel leaks that have put an end to a fair few T25's over the years with engine fires. Lots of info on here.
