So I just had an interesting chat about speed limits.

Since I bought the panel van I've adhered to commercial speed limits and was looking at going down the motor caravan route in order to change it.

Then I looked at my v5 and I saw that I doesn't have a category code (m1 or n1 as per http://www.dft.gov.uk/vca/vehicletype/d ... gories.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

So since I've been seeking out definitive speed limits from the various agencies. I assumed they would be as per N1 but vosa the Dvla the dft and the vsa all couldn't tell me that was the case.

So I call the Norfolk constabulary and speak to a Sargent and he says he will get me the information I need.

He comes back to be 2.5h later and says that in the eyes of traffic policing, if the van is less than 3.5t and doesn't carry more than 8 (as per m1) and is presented as a camper, the m1 speed limits apply.
Equally if a micro us or camper is stipped out and used for trade it would be treated as a commercial vehicle.


Anyone have any thoughts on this?

My v5 doesn't have anything in the certification column... Totally blank.

Taxation code of plg like most things.

Body type is panel van but the Sargent said its how the vehicle presents.

I'm not saying this is 100%

But it is interesting.

Yes commercial vans have lower speed limits, my ex panel has windows so looks like a camper I think plod would put it in the camper catagory.

Unfortunely fixed speed cameras don't look at the van, just the Reg number and what that comes back as.....

Not an issue with my 1.7 diesel

Cameras use the certification system, n1 carries the speed restriction, not the body type.

So if like me, it's clear, then yet again 70.

and when the matter was processed it would be classed as what it is a , a commercial van , and those limits would apply, plods interpretation has nothing to do with it

Dunno if all speed cameras are that clever, I though most Gatso type just trigger above the roads speed limit, plod with hand held gun not sure if that is linked to DVLA?

from memory

someone on a forum, poss T4 as they would be the speedy vans , who had his speeding ticket overturned because of the n1/m1 confusion as his was motorcaravan but n1

there was a letter from vosa (as it was back then) requested via the freedom of info rules that stated an n1 van converted to motorcaravan was then regarded as m1 by vosa

this was back in 2008...maybe.... but should be easy to google

Gatso and the turd-in-the-camera-van type outfits are there to do you for speeding and that's all.

ANPRs and Specs ( the fixed distance cameras as used in roadworks) are linked to DVLA databases and will detect what classification of van you are driving. I asked my son in law, who is a serving police officer and he asked his Sargent to clarify. The reference to the 'turd in van' came from him as that's how other fellow officers see them to be. One of 'em obviously has been done recently
