Hi

My local village garage has looked at my 1981 2lt Aircooled T3 and suggested going to a specialist.

Sayes heat shield missing and no compression in two cylinders, suggested a new engine

Well past my level of competence, Any advice or recommendation of someone Hampshire/Dorest border?

Are you sure they said no compression? Surely they said 'low compression'. What is it like to drive? Has it passed the MOT recently? Is it using a lot of oil?

I had a garage saying exactly the same, including that I needed a replacement engine.

Turned out to be the brake servo hose was not connected. Fixed with a 10pence jubilee clip.

Take it to a trusted specialist.

Surprised you need a new engine!

I would suggest getting a compression tester and taking a look yourself.

If it is both, perhaps the head is leaking ???

Agreed do a compression test yourself, if you can remove a spark plug you can do a compression test.

thankyou all for the great response. No, your right, he said hardly any compression in the one and low in the next.

Failed MOT this year on emissions, not running on all cylinders splutters and farts about.

I was hoping just a head, like the idea of the brake servo fix!

Think I need to find someone on the south coast who knows these air cooled engines inside out and get it sorted properly before I break it further fiddling!

I use a guy in Cowes, but I am based on the Isle of Wight so it is easy. He gets people coming from Kent and Manchester to get their air cooled vans sorted out/ serviced. Highly recommended, but not sure if you can travel/ afford the extortionate ferry fare?

indeed, I doubt that too.
Taking the head off will confirm any valve issues
New head inc valves and springs.. £275
+ gasket set + fitting = less than a replacement
..take out the fitting and it's even more worth it

Hi All, thanks very much yes hopefully your right about the head. Found a local mobile air-cooled specialist who been recommend by the local club to take a look next week, thanks again
