Timing mark? 2l CU Aircooled.

Alright, I give up. I can't for the life of me find the timing mark on my motor. She's been fitted with a non vac advance dizzy so I presume at 3000rpm the timing should be around 33? I've had a long look with the engine running and timing light connected and I've had a good look with the engine off. I can't find nowt on it.
Does someone have a photo of exactly what I'm looking for or the procedure (in laymans terms) for finding tdc on no. 1?
And.... who's best to contact to get a correct dizzy sorted thru? I don't have any of the ECU gubbins connected at the minute so I presume I need the hall send unit, dizzy, vac advance unit etc etc. (I have PM'd Spannerrack.)
This dizzy's probably got a max of 12 deg advance on it! Need it sorted asap.

You need one of these:

It sits between the plastic mesh and the fan housing.
And a spot of white paint on the notch in the pulley.
And a dual vac dizzy - not very common but worth pursuing to get it running right.

Doh! Sorry chap. Had to have a good clear out over the Xmas. I don't have a garage so it was stowed at parents.
I've got the timing scale, but can't find a timing mark. Is it on the outer rim that I should be looking? I'll probably kick myself once I've found it.
There does appear to be a bolt on the backing plate that would be near to a timing mark though. If I look through the 5mm gap around the wheel I can see a bolt that's at around 30 deg at 3000ish rpm with the timing gun. Not a great way of doing it, but would give me a starting point.
I googled for synchrospares but synchrospares.co.uk doesn't seem to be up any more. Has Cj got a username on here or elsewhere?

Try

The notch is on the furthest away part of the pulley and you may need to run your nail round it to find it - but get close first by lining the rotor arm up as in Haynes.
The timing scale bolts on with 2 of the plastic mesh retaining bolts - to be viewed thro the little access hatch

Well spotted!
I'll give them a ring later. Ironically my bus came from about 15 mins down the road from them.
How important is the plastic mesh? I don't have one.

It stops big debris from getting sucked into the fan and reducing passage of lovely cooling air, which is quite important, nay essential. It's only stopped the odd leaf from getting into my engine but plastic bags have been known apparently.
Get one - you need it!!

Okey Kokey

, RCC Imports have got a shelf full, but chap wants a part number to definately verify it's the correct one. Is there a definitive way of checking? I presume he's got a good selection considering their business nature and don't want to end up with a wrong'un.

Ok, doing some digging I've found a couple of possible numbers:
VAG no: 071 905 205 (From wanted ad on Brickwerks)
or
VW 039-905-205C, Bosch 0237 022 009 (from
Old Volks Home
What gives with the 071 & 039 difference in the two codes?

Righty, thanks to Berkshire Bugs, I've got a 071 905 205. I've tried fitting this and it appears to be very slightly the wrong orientation. Engine's at tdc on No. 1, obviously bottom of dizzy shaft will only go one way. When I try and orientate the dizzy so the dizzy arm lines up with the notch the body of the dizzy/vacuum is obsturcted by the engine being in the way

. What am I doing wrong or is there a way to reconfigure the dizzy? It was also suggested that the dizzy drive may have been rotated a couple of teeth to fit the now removed 009 dizzy. It appears to be 90 degrees-ish. Moving the plugs around one worked until it came to refitting the air box, which then put the dizzy maybe 15-20 degs round too far for it to work without backfiring.
Oh, and I found the timing mark in the end.

I would suspect the diz drive being out - Haynes has a reasonable description of resetting it - here's what it should look like at No1TDC
