Was having difficulty changing gear, and had identified this as possibly the Clutch Slave Cylinder which is located under the engine/gearbox join. I moved the rubber boot and some clutch fluid came out, so happy day faulty cylinder. Went to drive to the garage to get repaired and now I have no clutch at all, and I think that the rod for this has become detached. How difficult is it to re-attach? I've looked at the picture of new slave cylinders but it doesn't give any insight into how to re-attached.

Hi, I dont think the rod should be connected to the piston, it isn't on ours as recently replaced it. The rod on ours was just rounded off to be a good fit inside the piston. If you have fluid leaking past the rubber boot sounds as though the seals have gone, got ours off ebay from b&b components, cheers good luck with it.

Fluid gets past the piston seal and fills up the rubber boot when you press the pedal. Rubber boot acts as a spring so this fluid pushes the piston back too far when you release the pedal. Next time you try to use the clutch, the piston has too far to travel and won't disengage the clutch. After a while the fluid creeps back past the piston, and it works again for one or two pushes. Annoying.

Yep, rod isn't "attached" as such, it just sits in a ball shaped recess in the end of the piston. Leaks = sounds like you need a new cylinder for sure !

Replacing a clutch slave cylinder is quite easy. One of the two bolts is a bit awkward to get at, but that's all. Just need to bleed it after fitting of course. I did one in less than an hour and that was at the side of the road.
I believe there are cheap ones and there are good ones Brickwerks only sell the good ones

If your van is parked ar$e end uppards when you do this once the cylinder is replace slacken the bleed nipple right off and have a coffee ... they often self-bleed.
